WHAT IS A TAX CREDIT?
What is a tax credit?
A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar amount taxpayers claim on their tax return to either reduce the income tax owed or increase the amount of income tax returned. You may qualify for the following state and federal tax credits:
- Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
- Child Tax Credit (CTC)
- California EITC (CalEITC)
- Young Child Tax Credit (YCTC)

Individuals/families earning:
- $1-$67,000 per year can get free tax assistance and may qualify to claim federal tax credits
- $1-$31,950 may qualify for additional state tax credits

VITA sites are a way for you to get in-person help from a trained individual at no cost. These trusted tax preparers will see if you qualify for other available tax credits to maximize your refund or reduce the amount you owe.
WHAT DO I NEED DURING MY APPOINTMENT?
WHAT YOU NEED:
Please bring the following with you to your appointment:
- Photo ID
- Social Security Card or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). ITINs can be obtained through Dreams for Change if needed.
- Income documents including W2s or 1099s
- Bank account information for direct deposit
- School tuition or student loans interest statements if applicable
- Date of health coverage for yourself and any dependents
