Strategic partnerships aim to expand health care, education and youth programs
ESCONDIDO – March 13, 2026 – The YMCA of San Diego County hosted a site dedication ceremony today in celebration of the future Escondido YMCA – a Campus for Community Well-Being designed to bring education, health care and positive youth development together in one shared space.
More than 200 community members, nonprofit partners and local officials gathered at the North Broadway campus to mark the milestone and highlight the foundational partnerships driving the project forward. CEOs representing Neighborhood Healthcare, National University, the Escondido Union School District and the Y joined California State Assemblymember Darshana Patel and City of Escondido Mayor Dane White for the milestone occasion.
“Community well-being is built on collaboration, unity and shared vision,” said Todd Tibbits, CEO of the YMCA of San Diego County. “Rather than a traditional standalone YMCA, this is a collaborative campus built through intentional partnerships. Together, we are creating a place where young people can grow, families can thrive and the entire community can feel a sense of belonging.”
For more than 60 years, the YMCA has served Escondido and surrounding neighborhoods through youth programs, childcare services, expanded learning opportunities and housing support for young people experiencing homelessness. Leaders say the new campus model will build on that legacy while adapting to evolving community needs.
The future campus will house nonprofit partners providing essential services such as educational pathways, health care access and positive youth development programs. By aligning mission-driven organizations around a shared vision, the project aims to help address some of the region’s most pressing challenges, including youth engagement, access to care and educational opportunity.
“Partnerships like this demonstrate what is possible when organizations come together to support the whole community,” said Dr. Mark D. Milliron, president and CEO of National University.” By connecting education with healthcare and youth development in one shared space, this campus will help create new pathways for learners and families in Escondido to access the resources and opportunities to grow and succeed.”
The campus will operate with services designed around the needs of local families, focusing on youth enrichment, child care, water safety, educational support and community health services.
“We’re always looking for innovative ways to break down barriers to health care and expand access for those in need, regardless of circumstance,” said Dr. Rakesh Patel, CEO of Neighborhood Healthcare. “This partnership with the YMCA, the Escondido Union School District and National University represents a unique model that we believe can be replicated in other communities. By working together, we can connect more families to medical, dental and behavioral health services while also helping them access programs such as Medi-Cal and CalFresh.”
School district officials say the initiative is part of a larger strategy to improve student safety and expand enrichment opportunities across the community. More than 1,000 Escondido students have taken swimming lessons since the pool reopened last year.
“This site dedication marks an exciting step forward in the Escondido Union School District’s commitment to strengthening our community,” said Andy McGuire, superintendent of the Escondido Union School District. “This reimagined space will expand access to health care, educational opportunities and youth development programs, ensuring families in Escondido have the support they need to thrive for generations.”
