Amid a growing crisis in youth emotional well-being, the YMCA of San Diego County is deeply committed to the transformative Positive Youth Development (PYD) approach. PYD surrounds young people with supportive relationships, enriching experiences, and nurturing environments, creating a strong foundation for them to grow, build meaningful connections, and realize their full potential.
How the Y Inspires Well-Being and Connection
The Y is more than a community hub; it’s where individuals and families grow together in spirit, mind, and body. Last year, nearly 100,000 members joined, seeking connection and purpose. Programs like LIVESTRONG at the YMCA help cancer survivors rebuild strength, while the Diabetes Prevention Program supports healthier lifestyles. Through initiatives like blood pressure monitoring, we address critical health needs with care. Every experience at the Y tells a story of resilience and transformation, fostering well-being and belonging for all.
Keeping Kids Active and Engaged through Nature
At the Y, we believe every child has incredible potential. Through programs at YMCA Camp Marston, YMCA Camp Raintree Ranch, YMCA Camp Surf, and Sixth Grade Camp, we’ve helped to inspire resilience, curiosity, and growth for 19,080 young people. Camp Marston and Raintree provide adventures like hiking, horseback riding, archery, and canoeing in Julian’s serene forests, building kids’ confidence and independence. At Camp Surf, children explore ocean activities like surfing and marine life studies while learning water safety and gaining self-assurance. Together, we’re dedicated to preserving nature and creating opportunities for discovery and growth.
Water safety has the power to significantly reduce drowning incidents across communities. By instilling confidence and knowledge in both children and adults, water safety education creates a ripple effect of positive change. In response to this critical issue, the Y focuses on empowerment and education, teaching 37,876 individuals vital water safety skills.
When school is out, many children find themselves at home with limited opportunities for physical activity, personal growth, or new experiences. At the Y, day camp fills this gap, providing a safe, welcoming environment where kids can thrive socially, emotionally, and physically. With over 42,000 interactions rooted in positive youth development, we nurture the whole child and create spaces filled with joy, connection, and growth.
At the heart of our mission lies an unwavering commitment to providing county-wide affordable, safe child care for all, a crucial lifeline our community’s children, families, and providers.
Through YMCA Childcare Resource Services (CRS):
In addition to its resources for child care, Childcare Resources, the Y offers a range of programs that provide a safe and nurturing environment for children and families. These include preschools, which have provided a strong foundation for early learning to 4,879 children, and the Character Builders Before and After School licensed care, which offered structured activities in a safe and nurturing environment to 26,717 students last year. The Expanded Learning Program, which extends educational opportunities by providing 100% subsidized care before and after school care, made possible through federal and state government funding, has positively impacted the lives of 17,500 students in fiscal year 2024-25.
Focused on the Person Before the Athlete
The Y sports programs touched 18,530 youth and adults by fostering belonging, growth, and potential in a supportive environment. The Y prioritizes personal growth alongside athletic development by emphasizing character, resilience, teamwork, and building self-esteem. Strong partnerships with organizations like the Alex Morgan Foundation, San Diego Wave, Padres, and San Diego Seals enhance this mission by breaking barriers and creating opportunities.
At YMCA Youth and Family Services (YFS), the purpose is clear: to lead with compassion. This past year, our YFS team fulfilled our Y’s vision to be the catalyst to transform lives and communities in numerous ways.
15,443 individuals benefited from programs offering connection, hope, and belonging.
3,707 people received critical, hands-on support.
2,789 individuals connected to essential programs and services.
8,822 community members participated in dialogue and collaboration for a shared vision of the future.
582 families accessed family preservation services.
1,362 individuals received mental and behavioral health support.
1,763 young people gained housing, education, and employment services to inspire personal success.
A summer learning program offering San Diego Unified students enriching academic and creative experiences, serving – served 1,393 students with $828,613 in grants.
Helping individuals adopt healthier habits to prevent prediabetes.
Our Y’s funding comes from membership and program fees, donations, grants, and fundraising events. Every dollar is carefully allocated to maintain our programs, support our team, and allow all people to reach their fullest potential. Strong financial stewardship ensures we can serve more individuals, promote well-being, and grow alongside our community.
